I understand many of you have no desire to compete in the CF arena. I understand many of you just can’t even imagine yourself being good enough to actually compete with the fittest men and women on the planet. I understand how many skills are needed (think double unders, muscle ups, and HSPU’s) to even bother showing up to any CF competition.
What many of YOU don’t understand is how it’s everyday Joe and Jane that are the people showing up to the competitions. People like you who walked into a CrossFit affliate, had their ass handed to them, and kept coming back for more.
CrossFit is still very new to most of the planet, especially Cornwall. It amazes me how people sometimes expect to leap from point A to point Z. If that were the case CrossFit would be easy. Everyone could do it and coach it, and the whole planet would be extremely fit. Not the case..
Last year at the sectionals we were no more than 15 people including spectators. This year we will be double or even triple that number. Why? Because as a gym/community we’ve gotten stronger, smarter, and more athletic since that day.
Everybody who competes started out with little to no skill in the CF arena. The people that compete simply get smarter and better at what they love – the sport of fitness – CrossFit, each and every day.
The girl in the video I linked below is Heather Keenan. Heather is a games competitor, affiliate owner, mother, and coach. She is absolutely great at everything in her life and you will kind of understand why, when you watch the vid.
One point I’d like to make is that when I took CF level 2 a couple years ago, Heather was in my class. At the time she was very fit but I remember her not being able to do a muscle up.
I also remember her trying over and over after a long day of class work, coaching work, and a wod…
My point is this.
Most advanced CrossFitter’s like Heather are advanced due to one major reason: They started CF’ing 1-3 years before you. I know you were expecting a different answer but there isn’t one. The people at the games are no doubt super disciplined, possibly superior genetically, and have the heart of a lion, but they’ve also been CrossFitting much longer than we have.
Let this factoid motivate you. Don’t think CrossFit is easy and that each new level comes without countless hours of focus and training. Believe that you’re a CrossFitter for life and that you will always improve. Rest easy knowing you’re doing everything (80/20) in your power to get better week by week.
Lastly, draw out a timeline of how long you’ve been with us at Cornwall/Akwesasne CrossFit. The data on your timeline would consist of any type of success whether it be a heavier back squat, looser shoulders, smaller waistline, etc..
Be realistic and understand ‘Rome was not built in a day’..

The unfortunate thing about crossfit is….not everyone knows about it, so tell someone!
