Program Goals and Objectives:
Turn young lives around through community based support. At risk and/or disengaged adolescents will gain self confidence, experience a sense of belonging and work towards good physical and social health. This BGC InsideStrong program serves as an excellent example of the Boys and Girls Club core value of “collaboration”, “we will work together with the public and private sector to create healthy community solutions for providing children and youth with what they need for optimal development”. Through the collaborative efforts of the Boys & Girls Club, Caveman Strong, the Public and Separate School Boards, Cornwall Community Police and Youth Justice we can help make a difference in the lives of young people who may simply be in need of, or desperate for, role models, healthy physical outlets and people who care.
InsideStrong participants learn respect for themselves and for others by participating in, and encouraging others, while being mentored in fitness, and in effort, by role models and coaches who care. The sense of inclusion and belonging in this unique community gym environment has proven significant to these young people who are often on “the outside” or “fringes” of the regular school system. Many have never had the opportunity to participate in school or recreational sports and teams and to experience the sense of belonging to something unique. The opportunity to fully participate and function within a dynamic, coached fitness program positively impacts their self esteem and confidence. Other positive outcomes including their newly discovered “can do” attitude and their own empowerment to make healthy life choices have all been observed by parents, teachers and the coaches. The impact of this program will be measured by their improved educational and social outcomes in the short term and their improved life outcomes in the long term.
InsideStrong speaks out for these often “on the fringe” youth and their families by reducing disadvantage in opportunity and experience, enhancing their lives, and enabling them to play and to be heard in a safe, supportive and healthy environment
Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG, Club Garcons et Filles de Cornwall/SDG :
For more than 100 years, Boys and Girls Clubs in communities across Canada have been helping young people to discover, develop and achieve their best potential as they grow to become Canada’s future adults, citizens and leaders, by engaging them in activities that help develop healthy minds and bodies. Belonging to a Boys and Girls Club is often a life changing experience as young people can build healthy, supportive relationships with caring adult role models which can deeply and positively influence the life path they choose.
In our work with children, youth, families and communities, all Boys and Girls Clubs are guided by five core values. These core values are the standard by which all BGC services and programs are measured and they are:
- Inclusion and Opportunity: provide access to resources and supports that will enable them to overcome barriers and achieve their positive potential in life.
- Respect and Belonging: model honesty, fair play, positive attitude, cooperation and acceptance
- Empowerment: provide pathways for young people to grow into responsible, contributing and self reliant members of society by encouraging and modeling healthy lifestyles, a life-long passion for learning, leadership and life skills and a sense of social responsibility.
- Collaboration: work together as a community to create healthy community solutions for providing children and youth with what they need for optimal development.
- Speaking Out: we speak out and reach out, on behalf of our young members to reduce disadvantage, enhance their lives and enable their voices and ideas to be heard.
Caveman Strong provides a unique group dynamic to physical fitness. We offer a constantly varied, functional movement regime executed at high intensity (power output ). Natural human movements are mixed up into new and exciting workouts every day to improve the 10 generally recognized physical fitness skills which are cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, coordination, agility, speed, balance and accuracy. An individual is as fit as they are competent in each of these ten skills and this fitness regime improves each of them through supervised training and practice.
Improvements in endurance, stamina, strength and flexibility come about through training. Training refers to activity that improves performance through a measurable organic change in the body. Improvements in coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy come about through practice. Practice refers to activity that improves performance through changes in the nervous system. Power and speed are adaptations of both training AND practice.
Our coaches are there to teach and to motivate but most importantly to ensure individuals are striking the right balance between safety, efficiency and intensity.
Adolescent members of the Boys and Girls Club from both the Public and the Separate school board systems receiving intensive support in order to “stay in school”. They attend specialized, non main stream educational programs such as Section 23 Day Treatment Classes, ABLE (long term suspension program), TR Leger and St. Mathew’s alternative education programs. Also, adolescents referred from Youth Justice and/or Cornwall Community Police Services who may fall outside the school system catchment.
Students will participate on average three times per week during the academic year at the Caveman Strong gym located at 44 Pitt Street (the back of the old Standard Freeholder building) in Cornwall. Monday thru Friday, 11 a.m. – noon will be dedicated Boys & Girls Club InsideStrong program time. Ten to twelve students from the various school locations will participate at one time (total participant list will be close to 40) with individually referred adolescents participating on their own time during regularly scheduled classes.
Caveman Strong Owner/Head Coach Tyler Touchette will coordinate and oversee the fitness regime with support from coaches Kyle and Josee. The BGC Executive Director, or designate, will dialogue with participating organizations to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of the program on an ongoing basis. The BGC Program Manager, or designate, will handle the program accounting and collect and maintain monthly data for number of participant’s and other statistics. It will be important to quantify results of this effort through rates of participation, school attendance, etc, but most importantly through collection of personal stories and testimonials from the students themselves, their families and their teachers.
Note: Caveman Strong will afford students, at not cost, the opportunity to continue with their fitness program and their journey to good health, during July and August by participating in the regular, daily classes.
The Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG, Upper Canada District School Board and a private foundation currently support this program as “patrons”. Donations from local organizations, businesses and individuals in support of InsideStrong would be gratefully accepted by the ” Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG” with a charitable receipt issued. This program relies on the support of the greater community for its continued operation, growth and success. Interested donors my contact Tyler Touchette 613-551-2751
… the gym atmosphere is friendly, positive and very encouraging and all the trainers are fun and outgoing and that is why I go to every class. They promote healthy living and after every workout I feel more confident not only in myself butt also with the new skills (strengths) they have taught me. I enjoy going to caveman strong and being part of a group of people who make me feel good about myself…. Carlina
….. last year I never came to caveman strong, I didn’t have the confidence in myself to go, but this year I go every time. I enjoy lifting weight’s (especially if I can beat my teacher!) and seeing how much I improve. It makes me feel good to see improvement, and I can honestly say I do have more confidence…… Brandy
…..I am very glad we are able to go to caveman strong. I really like the workouts even though my muscles hurt the next day! And I lifted way more than I ever thought I could and almost doubled my weight. I always tried hard and didn’t give up. I really appreciate you guys letting us come to cavemanstrong….. Brandon
…I had a really awesome time working out with you guys. I can feel the improvement, feel active, feel more confident about myself. Thank you very much for letting me come to cavemanstrong …. Owen
….thank you for the opportunity to let me work out in your gym. It was a great experience with the best staff ever. My favourite workout was the dead lifting – thank you for teaching me that and I am going to tell everyone to come to your gym…. Kendal
…I enjoy taking the students to caveman strong, being able to see them improve and accomplish new skills and confidence is definitely worthwhile. These students are faced with a lot of negative pressure and for them to be able to participate and learn from a group of trainers who are welcoming, encouraging, and fun makes a difference in their lives. We leave the gym tired and feeling great after a workout….. thank you.
… I would like to extend a huge thank you for the opportunity to participate in the insidestrong program. Several of our students have been “hooked” from the first day. One particular student has improved his attendance ten fold because of caveman strong. A few months ago his attendance was of major concern to the point where an attendance contract was implemented. Since embarking on the fitness program he has not missed one day. There have been times when he has missed his bus but that no longer serves as an excuse because he calls the classroom and tells us he’s on his way. It definitely reaffirms our belief in the power of fitness, engagement and how it takes a village to raise a child. Your organization has given our students a gift that will benefit them in the years to come and for this we are truly grateful. To witness their enthusiasm and excitement when they’re at the gym and upon their arrival back to class definitely makes you smile. Some of the students have been trying to find ways to earn money so they can continue going to the gym after the school year is finished (remarkable)… god bless.
…. we see more confident, happy, athletic and supportive youths as they progress and learn the importance of good health, exercise and nutrition through the insidestrong program….. Tyler
….teaching these youth about health and fitness opens their minds to new possibilities in their lives. We see it every day with this group – a youth gaining confidence, or offering encouragement, or setting goals, or simply having fun getting fit. I truly enjoy working with these kids and helping them towards a healthier future….Josee
… working the 11 a.m. class is one of the brightest spots in my day. I’m so honoured to be a part of this program and believe in what this program is accomplishing: fit, healthy and happy youth. Hopefully, I have been able to play a small part in the transformative results we’ve observed in these young people…. Kyle
……this program encourages having fun while being active. It also promotes cooperation and teamwork. Many times throughout the program kids will engage in friendly competition, which encourages teamwork. The program will teach them to not only celebrate their own accomplishments but also the accomplishments of others….Dan
… these kids are learning that effort must be implemented when reaching for a fitness goal. This translates to day to day activities and it will make them work harder to attain their life’s wishes….Natasha
Boys and Girls Club Board Member:
While volunteering at one of our clubhouses I met a young member who participates in our InsideStrong program. She spoke about how much she really loves going to the gym with her group and how she is feeling better about herself as the work outs are helping her to lose the extra weight which is so bothersome to her. She shared that she is often teased both at school and outside of school about her larger size. She loves the program and the instructors (the names of whom she listed off with pride) and seemed very pleased to learn that I also belong to Caveman Strong. We both agreed going to caveman strong made our day. I felt a sense of pride about our InsideStrong program and what it is able to offer to these “kids” . I have had the pleasure of observing these young in the gym and have been impressed with the quality of instruction, the mutual respect shown between coaches and students, and the keen interest students have in improving their physical selves while growing in confidence and inner strength as well….
